BENI MONTRESOR, A LEADING FIGURE IN INTERNATIONAL THEATER

Beni Montresor was one of the most important figures on the international performing arts scene in the second half of the 20th century.
He was a set and costume designer, theater and film director, playwright, illustrator and author of children’s books, and creator of ballets and musicals. He worked with the top artists of his era in opera, theater, cinema and dance. The American press called him “one of the theater’s most profound magicians” and “a new Renaissance man.”
Montresor was born in Verona in 1926 and studied painting at the Fine Arts Academy of Venice. During the postwar years he enrolled at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, where he worked with some of the great Neorealist directors and with actors like Alberto Sordi, Anna Magnani, and Giulietta Masina.
After moving to New York in 1960, he began a career as a set and costumer designer for opera, theater, ballet and musical theater, and became much sought-after by the major American and European houses. He worked with directors Federico Fellini, Jerôme Savary, and Henri Ronse, singers Renata Tebaldi, Franco Corelli, Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti, Raina Kabaivanska, Placido Domingo, and Cecilia Gasdia, and dancers and choreographers Rudolf Nurejev, Carla Fracci, Paolo Bortoluzzi, Luciana Savignano, Alvin Ailey, and Flemming Flindt. He wrote several film subjects and screenplays and won accolades at the Cannes Film Festival for his film Pilgrimage (1972).
His plays range from contemporary events to the lives of great artists, such as August Strindberg and Giuseppe Verdi. His productions for children are timeless and his illustrated books won the most prestigious American awards (the Caldecott Medal, the Gold Medal of the American Society of Illustrators). He adapted and illustrated for children some of Mozart’s and Rossini’s operas. Inspired by the complex visual world of children, he also wrote stories, some of which were adapted for the theater, such as “The Witches of Venice,” with music by Philip Glass.
Montresor also dedicated himself to assuring the future of theater, lending his services to productions that promoted young artists and developing a new, unconventional style accessible to the tastes of young people.
Beni Montresor passed away in Verona on October 11, 2001.

Beni Montresor è stato uno dei maggiori protagonisti dello spettacolo internazionale del secondo Novecento.
Scenografo, costumista e regista cinematografico e teatrale, drammaturgo, illustratore e autore di libri per bambini, creatore di balletti e di musicals, ha collaborato con i maggiori artisti
dell’opera lirica, del teatro, del cinema, della danza.
La stampa americana l’ha definito “uno dei più profondi incantatori del palcoscenico” e “uomo del nuovo Rinascimento”.
Nato a Verona nel 1926, si è formato nella pittura all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia, per approdare al Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia nella Roma dell’immediato dopoguerra.
Qui ha operato nel cinema con i maggiori registi del Neorealismo e con attori come Alberto Sordi, Anna Magnani e Giulietta Masina.
Trasferitosi a New York nel 1960, ha intrapreso la sua carriera nel teatro lirico e di prosa, nel balletto e nel musical, conteso per quarant’anni tra i più grandi teatri d’America e d’Europa.
Ha affiancato registi come Federico Fellini, Jerôme Savary, Henri Ronse, diretto cantanti come Renata Tebaldi, Franco Corelli, Johan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti, Raina Kabaivanska, Placido Domingo, Cecilia Gasdia, collaborato con danzatori e coreografi come Rudolf Nurejev, Carla Fracci, Paolo Bortoluzzi, Luciana Savignano, Alvin Ailey, Flemming Flindt.
Ha scritto numerosi soggetti e sceneggiature per il cinema, segnalandosi a Cannes con “Pilgrimage”.
Le sue drammaturgie si sono rivolte alla più recente attualità o alle vite di grandi artisti del passato, come Strindberg e Giuseppe Verdi.
Instancabile la sua produzione per l’infanzia. I suoi libri illustrati hanno vinto i premi più prestigiosi d’America (Cadelcott medal, Gold Medal dell’American Society of Illustrators); ha riscritto e illustrato per i bambini le opere di Mozart e di Rossini; ha creato favole moderne suscitate dal complesso immaginario dell’infanzia di oggi. Alcune di esse sono diventate spettacoli, come “Le Streghe di Venezia” con le musiche di Philip Glass.
Si è inoltre prodigato per il futuro del teatro, prestando la sua opera in produzioni che incoraggiassero i giovani artisti, e cercando sempre uno stile nuovo e non convenzionale che incontrasse il gusto dei giovani.
Beni Montresor si è spento a Verona l’11 ottobre del 2001.
